What happens to impounded cars? Regardless of whether a vehicle is impounded by law enforcement or a private property, it can usually be redeemed by the owner for a fee. If not redeemed, it will be disposed of, along with its contents, after undergoing proper legal processes. By law, impounded vehicles must be offered for sale through a public auto auction or other sales, or disposal.
